February 17 St. Luke Belludi and St. Guevrock

So many of the saints’ stories are about traveling the country side, establishing churches and monasteries. Even with modern convenience, I have found people are not their best in the middle of traveling. Their routines are disrupted, the food is odd and coming at unusual times. Planes, trains and automobiles never come and go on schedule. And this is with the modern conveniences of water, shelter, food and rest rooms available at least at some point in the day.  Imagine how cranky travelers in the Middle Ages were?

St. Luke was the traveling companion of St. Anthony of Padua. St. Guevrock was the traveling companion of Saint Tadwal in sixth century England. They were the ones who saw the saints at their worst. Who knew of the bowel issues and preferences in prayer spots. I know I treasure the people in my life with whom I can travel and be myself. They are few and far between. The job is so difficult, and so appreciated, these two were rewarded with the higher standing simply for being good traveling companions. A testimony to both the difficulty of the position, and the temperament of these two men.
